Ode to the Yellow River, a famous oil painting by Chinese painter Chen Yifei in his early years in 1972, is 297 cm long and 143.5 cm wide. It depicts a Red Army standing on the mountains beside the Yellow River, looking at the sky.

The brushwork, composition and color of Ode to The Yellow River are highly praised in the Chinese art circle. China News Service described the painting as: "[The author] pays attention to the surface treatment and brushwork performance of the shape. The soldiers' feet and the rocks on which they stand are polished. The colors are bright and golden."

On New Year's Day in 1997, Chen Yifei wrote "Both hero and Romance" in Xinmin Evening News. He said: "The original idea of" Ode to the Yellow River "was to draw a shepherd, wearing a scarf around his stomach, carrying his head and singing xintianyou to the sky. After thinking it over, I found that this way of expression was almost interpreting the lyrics of The Yellow River Cantata, so I resolutely abandoned it. Turn into a Red Army soldier, standing on the top of the mountain, laugh proud mountains and rivers. In the process of creation, I restored the bright, blazing light on the mountain top to the canvas and rendered it into a dazzling white awn. In the hole of the red Army soldier's rifle, I drew a small group of red cloth in the shape of a small flower in full bloom. At his feet I also drew a line of wild geese flying southward at an Angle."

A few years after the Yellow River Concerto was published in 1969, Hong Guangwen, an art editor at Jiefang Daily, needed a loan of hand paintings to promote his work. In 1972, Chen Yifei was only 25 years old when he was in charge of the oil painting group of Shanghai Oil painting sculpture Creation Studio. He immediately participated in the design of the Yellow River oil painting group with Xia Baoyuan, Wang Yongqiang, Zhang Dingzhao, Qin Da-hu and Yan Guo-ji. The studio is located on the third floor of the old Shen Pao Building at 309 Hankou Road.

The piano concerto consists of four parts, and this group of paintings is also divided into four pieces. Yan Guoji painted the first movement of The Yellow River Boatman, Chen Yifei painted the second movement of The Yellow River Ode, xia Baoyuan and Wang Yongqiang painted the third movement of The Yellow River Indignation. Qin Dahu and Zhang Dingzhao painted the fourth movement "Defend the Yellow River", in which "Defend the Yellow River" was originally painted MAO Zedong and Lin Biao together, later Lin Biao defected, need to be repainted.

Among the four works, Ode to the Yellow River by Chen Yifei is the most familiar to the outside world. The first draft was gouty, with a red Army soldier and a farmer in sheep's clothing beside him, but Chen thought standing alone in the mountains would make the picture more concise and powerful, and removed the role of farmer in the second draft. This practice caused controversy in the art circles at that time, thinking that this practice could not represent the masses, at least to add a militia. In order to draw the picture according to his own idea, Chen Yifei had to greet and communicate with the leaders.

In order to paint the appearance of soldiers holding rifles, Chen Yifei also found a print of a Soviet oil painting, which showed Lenin reviewing the army and rows of soldiers holding rifles. In order to study this vague print, Chen Yifei read the work all the morning.

It was not until five years later that the work was exhibited for the first time in the Army Art Exhibition held in 1977. Its appeal and painting skills attracted the attention of the art circle and established Chen Yifei's position in the history of Chinese art.

In the 1980s, Chen Yifei decided to go abroad. The night before she boarded the plane, she suddenly decided to move several paintings, especially Ode to the Yellow River. Due to the extraordinary size of "Ode to the Yellow River", Chen Yifei had to ask a group of young brothers to help carry it, but the painting was so big that he had to use two bicycles to carry it in front of him and behind him. Chen's brother, Chen Yiming, is said to have been responsible for the restoration.
