On October 8th a court in Venice suspended the loan of leonardo Da Vinci's vitruvian man to the Louvre in Paris for an exhibition that opened in October.

Italia Nostra, the Italian antiquities organisation, said the vitruvian man, which is currently in storage at the instituto di venezia, was "too fragile to transport" and could be damaged by the Louvre's lights if left on display for a long time.

In appealing to the court, the group referred to a law prohibiting the removal of works of art from Italy that might have been damaged in transit or because of adverse conditions of the host museum.

The French culture ministry called the decision "incomprehensible."

The vitruvian man, one of leonardo's most famous works, is scheduled to be part of an exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of his death that opens on October 24.

A final decision on whether vitruvius can be lent will be made at a hearing on October 16, France24 reported Wednesday.

Dario? Dario Franceschini and France's culture minister, frank franken, are among those who have been asked to comment. Franck Riester signed a memorandum of understanding in Paris in September, cementing an agreement between the Italian museums and the Louvre to lease seven of leonardo's works. In return, France will lend Raphael's paintings to Italy for next year's commemoration of the 500th anniversary of his death. A spokesman for franceschini said several leonardo paintings were on their way to France.
